How Long Does Food Last in Flexible Packaging? Shelf Life Guide

Shelf life depends on three factors: the packaging barrier, the seal quality, and the product's sensitivity. Here is what each means in practice.

Barrier determines the ceiling

Oxygen and moisture are the enemies. Clear films pass both freely (days to weeks of shelf life). Metallized films block 95%+ (6-12 months). Aluminum foil blocks nearly 100% (12-24 months, or 2 years for retort). Match the barrier to your target shelf life — overpaying for foil on a 3-month product wastes money.

Seals are where packaging fails

90% of premature spoilage traces to seal defects: contamination in the seal area, low sealing temperature or damaged film. Professional pouch makers run seal strength tests on every production batch and inline leak testing for critical formats.

Typical shelf lives by product

  • Coffee (valve bag): 12-18 months
  • Snacks (metallized): 8-12 months
  • Dried food (foil): 18-24 months
  • Retort meals: 24 months ambient
  • Frozen food: 12-24 months at -18°C
